When pests show up in your Fort Myers home, the last thing you want is to spend hours researching pest control companies. But choosing the wrong company can mean wasted money, incomplete treatments, and a pest problem that comes right back. A few minutes of due diligence saves you from that frustration.
After 20 years in the industry across Southwest Florida, I have seen what separates the companies that solve problems from the ones that just collect payments. Here are the 7 questions to ask before hiring anyone, plus the red flags that should send you looking elsewhere.
What this guide covers:
- 7 questions to ask any pest control company before hiring
- Red flags that indicate a poor-quality company
- Why local knowledge matters in Southwest Florida
- How to compare quotes fairly
Question 1: Are You Licensed and Insured in Florida?
Florida requires pest control companies to hold a valid license from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The company must also carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Ask for the license number and verify it online at the FDACS website. This takes 30 seconds and tells you immediately if you are dealing with a legitimate operation.
Unlicensed operators are more common than you think, especially on platforms like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Nextdoor. They may offer cheap prices, but they use consumer-grade products, carry no insurance (meaning you are liable if they damage your property), and have no accountability.
Question 2: Do You Offer a Free Inspection Before Quoting?
Any reputable pest control company will inspect your home before giving you a price. The inspection tells the technician what pest species are present, the severity of the issue, the size and condition of your property, and any environmental factors (landscaping, moisture, structural gaps) that affect treatment. A company that quotes a flat price over the phone without seeing your home is either overcharging or underdelivering. Every home is different. The treatment plan should reflect your specific situation, not a one-size-fits-all package.

Question 3: What Products Do You Use, and Are They Safe for Pets and Children?
A good technician should be able to tell you exactly what products they will apply, where they will apply them, and what precautions (if any) your household should take. In most residential treatments, the products dry within 30 to 60 minutes and pose no risk to pets or children once dry. But you should always ask.
Be wary of companies that dodge this question or give vague answers. You have a right to know what chemicals are being applied inside and around your home. Florida law requires pest control operators to provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all products used upon request.
Question 4: What Is Your Guarantee?
The answer you want to hear: if pests return between scheduled treatments, we come back and re-treat at no additional charge. This is standard practice for quality companies. The answer you do not want: no guarantee, or a guarantee that only covers the first 7 days.
At SW Florida Pest Authority, our guarantee covers you between every quarterly visit. If ants, roaches, or any covered pest returns between treatments, we return and re-treat your home at no extra charge. See our full guarantee details.
Question 5: Do You Require a Long-Term Contract?
Some pest control companies lock customers into 12 to 24 month contracts with cancellation fees. This protects the company, not you. A company confident in their work does not need a contract to keep customers. They keep them by delivering results.
Ask whether you can cancel at any time without penalty. If the answer is no, keep looking. Plenty of Fort Myers pest control companies, including ours, operate on a service-by-service or voluntary quarterly basis with no contracts.
Question 6: How Long Have You Worked in Southwest Florida?
Pest behavior in Fort Myers is different from pest behavior in Orlando, Tampa, or Jacksonville. Lee County's coastal environment, sandy soil, tropical landscaping, and canal systems create pest pressures that are specific to this region. A technician who has worked in Southwest Florida for years understands seasonal patterns, species behavior, and the construction quirks of local homes in a way that a newly relocated tech from another state simply cannot.
Local knowledge matters. Ask how long the company has operated in the Fort Myers area, and how long the technician who will treat your home has worked locally.
Question 7: Can I See Your Google Reviews?
Google reviews are the most transparent indicator of a company's actual service quality. Look for companies with at least 10+ reviews, a rating of 4.5 or higher, and recent reviews (within the last 6 months). Read the negative reviews carefully because how a company responds to complaints tells you more than a stack of perfect ratings.
Be skeptical of companies with dozens of 5-star reviews that all sound the same or were posted in a short time span. Genuine reviews include specific details: the technician's name, the pest treated, the outcome, and the homeowner's experience. Check the reviews from our customers to see what we mean.
Red Flags to Watch For
- High-pressure sales tactics: A technician who pushes you to sign a contract on the spot is prioritizing commission over your best interest.
- No inspection before quoting: Flat pricing without seeing your home means generic treatment, not customized pest control.
- Vague about products: If they will not tell you what they are spraying, do not let them spray it.
- No visible license or identification: Every technician should carry a state-issued ID card. Ask to see it.
- Extremely low prices: Pest control that seems too cheap probably is. Cheap operators cut corners on product quality, application thoroughness, or follow-up service.
