High Priority

Mosquitoes in Southwest Florida

Southwest Florida has one of the most active mosquito environments in the United States. With 8+ months of warm, humid weather and standing water everywhere, mosquito pressure starts in early spring and does not let up until November.

Peak activity: March through November

How to Identify Mosquitoes

Look for these specific characteristics before treatment.

  • Asian tiger mosquito: black with white stripes, aggressive daytime biter
  • Southern house mosquito: pale brown, crepuscular, major West Nile vector
  • Floodwater mosquitoes: explosive populations after rain events
  • Bites most common around dusk and dawn for most species
  • Breeding sites: any standing water including gutters, plant saucers, and tire swings

Why Mosquitoes Are a Problem

Florida mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and dengue fever. The Asian tiger mosquito is also a known vector for Zika. Beyond disease, their density during summer makes outdoor spaces unusable without treatment.

How We Treat Mosquitoes

Monthly barrier spray targeting foliage and resting areas knocks down adult populations immediately. Larvicide tablets dropped in standing water sources that cannot be eliminated dramatically reduce mosquito breeding in treated sites. Retreatment if we get a significant rain event within 7 days.

Every treatment plan is tailored to your property and pest pressure. Jason does a full assessment before recommending an approach.

Mosquitoes Questions, Answered

Consumer aerosol sprays kill adults on contact but leave no residual protection. Within hours, new mosquitoes from breeding sites within 300 feet move into your yard. Professional barrier spray uses longer-lasting residual products that stick to foliage and kill mosquitoes as they land for days after application.
A properly chlorinated pool is not a breeding site, but the landscape around it often is. Standing water in plant saucers, decorative pots, low spots in the lawn, and gutters breeds far more mosquitoes than the pool itself. We target these sources with larvicide and treat surrounding vegetation with barrier spray.
We apply barrier spray at dusk when pollinators are not active, and we treat foliage rather than flowering plants. The products we use break down on contact with UV light within 24 to 48 hours. We avoid direct application to blooming plants during treatment.
Monthly treatment is the standard during our 8-month active season (March through November). During peak rainy season (June through September), we offer re-treatment within 7 days of significant rain events at no charge. Year-round plans are available for properties near water or mangroves.
