Black Ants in Southwest Florida

When Fort Myers homeowners see large black ants indoors, they are usually dealing with carpenter ants. Smaller black ants are typically big-headed ants or pavement ants. Both require different treatment strategies.

How to Identify Black Ants

Look for these specific characteristics before treatment.

  • Carpenter ants: 1/4 to 1/2 inch, entirely black or black and red
  • Sawdust-like frass near wood structures indicates carpenter ant galleries
  • Big-headed ants: small with a disproportionately large head on major workers
  • Activity near moisture-damaged wood, roof soffits, or window frames
  • Nighttime foraging common in carpenter ants

Why Black Ants Are a Problem

Carpenter ants excavate wood to build nests, structurally weakening soffits, window frames, door frames, and even load-bearing wood over time. Unlike termites, they do not eat the wood, but the damage is significant and often goes unnoticed until it is extensive.

How We Treat Black Ants

We locate and treat the satellite colony inside the structure with targeted dust injections and gel bait, then address the parent colony outside with perimeter spray. Moisture issues contributing to the infestation are flagged for repair.

Every treatment plan is tailored to your property and pest pressure. Jason does a full assessment before recommending an approach.

Black Ants Questions, Answered

Carpenter ants are significantly larger (up to 1/2 inch) and often appear singly or in small groups rather than in trails. Look for sawdust-like frass (wood shavings mixed with insect parts) near wood structures, which is a strong indicator. Regular black ants trail in organized lines and are much smaller.
Carpenter ant damage accumulates slowly, but over months or years they can hollow out soffits, window frames, and door frames to the point of structural failure. The damage is often hidden inside the wood and not visible until it is extensive. Early treatment is always less expensive than repairing the wood.
Moisture-damaged wood is the primary attractant. Carpenter ants prefer to nest in soft, wet, or decaying wood rather than dry, solid lumber. Roof leaks, poor drainage, and high humidity in crawl spaces or attics create ideal conditions. Fixing moisture issues removes their nesting incentive.
Carpenter ants can bite when disturbed and their bite can be painful, but they do not sting. They also release formic acid into the bite wound, which causes a brief burning sensation. They are not aggressive and only bite if handled or if the nest is threatened.
