Fire Ant Control in Southwest Florida: What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

7 min readBy SW Florida Pest Authority

Fire ants are one of the most persistent outdoor pests in Southwest Florida. Unlike up north where freezing winters kill colonies, Lee County's year-round warmth means fire ant populations never take a break. If you have a yard in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or anywhere in the region, you have dealt with fire ant mounds.

The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) arrived in the U.S. through the port of Mobile, Alabama in the 1930s and has thoroughly colonized the entire Gulf Coast. Southwest Florida's sandy, well-drained soil is ideal habitat. Here is what every homeowner needs to know about controlling them effectively.

What this guide covers:

  • Why fire ants are a year-round problem in Southwest Florida
  • Why most DIY treatments fail (and make things worse)
  • Professional mound treatment vs. broadcast treatment
  • How to protect your family and pets

Why Fire Ants Thrive in Lee County

Three conditions make Southwest Florida prime fire ant territory: warm year-round temperatures (they need soil above 60 degrees F to stay active), sandy soil that drains well and is easy to excavate, and consistent rainfall that keeps moisture available without flooding colonies.

A single fire ant colony can contain 100,000 to 500,000 workers and one or more queens. When a mound is disturbed, they can relocate the entire colony within hours. That is why kicking a mound or pouring boiling water on it usually just moves the problem a few feet over. The colony survives, the queen keeps laying eggs, and you get a new mound within days.

Why DIY Fire Ant Treatments Fail

Store-bought fire ant products fall into two categories: contact killers (granules and liquids you pour on the mound) and baits (granules scattered around the yard). Contact killers work on the ants they touch but rarely reach the queen, who sits deep in the colony. Without killing the queen, the colony rebuilds within a week.

Over-the-counter baits can work if applied correctly, but most homeowners apply too much product, apply it in the wrong conditions (fire ants do not forage in extreme heat or rain), or use old product that has lost its attractiveness. Professional-grade baits and application methods solve all three problems.

We see this pattern constantly in Fort Myers yards: a homeowner spends $50 to $80 on products from the hardware store, applies them 3 or 4 times, and still has mounds. Then they call us, and we resolve it in one treatment for less than what they spent on products that did not work.

Professional Mound Treatment vs. Broadcast Treatment

Mound treatment targets individual mounds with a direct injection of liquid insecticide into the colony. This kills the mound within 24 to 48 hours. It is effective for yards with a few visible mounds and costs less than a full broadcast treatment. However, it only treats the mounds you can see. Hidden colonies or new colonies that form between treatments are not covered.

Broadcast treatment applies a professional-grade bait across the entire yard. Worker ants carry the bait back to the queen, eliminating both visible and hidden colonies. This provides 3 to 6 months of protection and is the better choice for yards with a history of fire ant activity or properties adjacent to open land where new colonies migrate in.

For most Fort Myers homeowners, we recommend starting with a broadcast treatment and then folding fire ant maintenance into a quarterly pest control plan. This catches new colonies before they build visible mounds.

Protecting Your Family and Pets

Fire ant stings cause painful, burning welts that develop into itchy pustules within 24 hours. Most people experience localized pain and swelling. However, roughly 1% of people are allergic to fire ant venom and can experience anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention.

Children and small pets are at highest risk because they are more likely to step on a mound without realizing it, and their smaller body weight means the venom has a proportionally larger effect. Dogs that step in fire ant mounds often develop swollen paws and can experience respiratory distress.

If you have young children or pets who play in the yard, regular fire ant treatment is not optional in Southwest Florida. A quarterly application keeps the yard safe between professional visits.

Prevention Tips Between Treatments

Even with professional treatment, a few habits help keep fire ants at bay:

  • Keep mulch beds no deeper than 2 to 3 inches. Thick mulch creates ideal nesting habitat.
  • Trim vegetation away from the home's foundation. Fire ants use branches and shrubs as bridges to enter the house.
  • Fix irrigation leaks promptly. Fire ants are attracted to consistent moisture sources.
  • Inspect your yard weekly, especially after rain. New mounds are easier to treat when they are small.
